The Gifts of Volunteering

By now, it is surely common knowledge that our lives are busier and more stressful than ever before! The result of us filling our plates to the brim with commitments to our jobs while at the same time being caretakers of family members, both young and old, has been an increase in the number of people suffering from mental health concerns such as depression and anxiety. In turn, there has been a huge insurgence of people searching desperately for ways to improve their mental well-being and to find happiness amongst the chaos that is our lives. From Yoga retreats, to self-help book reading, to hours spent at the spa, to following inspirational podcasts religiously, we are continually looking for ways to avoid the potential “burnout” that lies ahead! These types of activities have proven to be effective in helping us with our general well-being, but some of them can be very costly and not always in our reach! A totally free, life-changing and transformative solution: VOLUNTEERING!

That’s right! The gift of volunteering not only greatly improves our community, but can also be an enormous benefit to us, and in return, our family! Volunteering can bring us happiness, good health and a sense of purpose, while offering vital help to people in need.

It connects us to people who have the same interests and goals. Interacting with others keeps away the bad-mood blues and is a great way to make new friends, especially if we tend to be shy. As well, it allows us to let our talents shine which boosts ourself-confidence!

Volunteering helps us to improve the condition of our body and mind. In fact, working with pets, as you could by volunteering with organizations such as “The Bello Project”, has proven to be a great way to combat anxiety and stress! Volunteering also keeps us active and physical activity increases our “happiness” hormones - Win! Win!

Volunteering can be a great way to get your foot in the door for a career you are considering or wish to try on for size! You earn no pay, but the skills you take away are priceless. This valuable experience will look great on a resume!

Doing something that we find worthwhile gives us a sense of purpose. Having purpose allows us to feel relaxed, fulfilled and invigorated - ready to take on our daily stresses! When we explore ways in which we can share our gifts (as in the form of time and talents), we also open our eyes to how truly blessed we are for the gifts we have been given!

To reap the benefits of volunteering, you will need to find the right type of position that you will enjoy and that you are able to do. Check out your community volunteer board or online resources. Perhaps consider newer organizations, such as “The Home Hospice Association”, as a great place to help leave your mark!

Remember the saying, “The more you give, the more you get”? Well, this is especially true when you volunteer your time to help others! Volunteering can help you improve your mental and physical well-being, give you the opportunity to build new relationships, and provide you with a sense of purpose. Best of all, it’s FREE to you and me!
