Ministry of Presence
Living and Dying Well as a Person on Christian Faith
A Story of Faithful Presence
"Carry one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ."Galatians 6:2
When my grandmother, Irene, was nearing the end of her earthly life, my father and I remained at her bedside. We prayed, held her hands, and sang the hymns she loved. We spoke of Christ's promise and of the home that awaited her.Although she appeared peaceful, she seemed to be waiting. When her daughter Sharon arrived, she gently took her mother's hand and simply said, "Hi Mom. It's me, Sharon. I love you, and I'm proud of you."Moments later, my grandmother died peacefully. That experience reminded our family that faithful presence is rarely about finding the perfect words. It is about showing up with love, faith, and compassion, trusting that God is already present in the room.
Being the presence of Christ when it matters most.
Throughout Scripture, we are called to love one another, carry one another's burdens, comfort those who mourn, and care for those who are suffering. The ministry of presence is one of the Church's oldest and most meaningful callings. It is expressed not through having all the answers, but through faithfully walking alongside others with compassion, humility, prayer, and hope.Serious illness, caregiving, dying, death, and grief touch every congregation. In these moments, people often need someone who will simply be present, listen without judgment, pray when welcomed, and remind them that they are not alone. The Ministry of Presence Living & Dying Well Pathway exists to help strengthen the confidence of churches and Christian communities to respond with the love of Christ during some of life's most sacred moments.
The Opportunity
Every congregation includes people experiencing serious illness, caring for loved ones, grieving significant losses, or preparing for the end of life. While churches have always provided spiritual care, many congregations are navigating new realities.People are living longer with complex illnesses.Families are often separated by distance.Pastors cannot meet every need alone. Many church members want to help but are unsure what to say or do.Yet every congregation already possesses one of its greatest resources: people willing to care for one another.Strengthening the ministry of presence helps churches recognize, nurture, and support those gifts so that no one has to face serious illness, caregiving, dying, death, or grief in isolation.
Walking Alongside Churches
We work alongside pastors, ministry leaders, congregations, caregivers, and people with lived experience to better understand how churches can continue to strengthen compassionate care within their communities.Together, we are exploring questions such as:How can congregations prepare members to confidently support one another? What helps people feel spiritually, emotionally, and socially supported during serious illness and grief? How can churches strengthen connections with families throughout illness, dying, and bereavement? What practical resources help volunteers and ministry leaders feel prepared? How can faith communities continue to reflect Christ's love in changing communities? These conversations continue to shape new resources, partnerships, and initiatives that respond to the needs identified by churches themselves.
Living the Ministry of Presence
The ministry of presence is expressed in many different ways. Sometimes it is sitting quietly beside someone who is seriously ill. Sometimes it is offering a prayer.Sometimes it is listening without trying to fix what cannot be fixed. Sometimes it is helping a family feel supported. Sometimes it is ensuring no one dies alone. Sometimes it is remembering those who continue to grieve long after the funeral has ended. No single act defines this ministry. Together, these acts become a visible expression of Christ's compassion within a community. Current initiatives include:
The Faithful Companion Program
Preparing members of Christian communities to confidently companion individuals experiencing serious illness, caregiving, dying, death, and grief through compassionate presence, attentive listening, prayer, and practical support.
Ministry of Presence Resources
Developing practical guides, reflection tools, and educational resources that help churches strengthen compassionate care within their congregations.
