Reflections from an End-of-Life Doula

Working and training as an end-of-life doula places one intimately alongside life's greatest mysteries—the thin veil separating living from dying. This veil fascinates me deeply; we joyously welcome new life into the world, yet we often fear or mourn the departure of a well-lived life from this earthly existence. Our reactions, perhaps, are shaped by personal maturity and religious or spiritual beliefs, which greatly influence how we navigate this delicate transition.

Throughout my years spent first in healthcare and now in funeral services, I've witnessed both remarkable beginnings and poignant endings. Each one tells a powerful story—one that deserves to be honoured and remembered. It has made me appreciate the sacredness and mystery surrounding life and death. Indeed, life itself feels mysterious, perhaps because we remain uncertain of what truly lies beyond our physical reality. Sometimes, I wonder if this existence is simply a dream we collectively experience, each of us contributing to a greater narrative.

As an end-of-life doula, I see my role clearly: I am an author, a narrator, and a gentle guide who helps write or retell the stories of those at the threshold between worlds. My job is to ensure their final chapters reflect dignity, compassion, and peace, helping both the individual and their loved ones understand, embrace, and learn from their journey.

Each life is a story worth telling, and every ending is a powerful beginning of understanding, compassion, and growth for those left behind. By accompanying others in their final moments, I continue to learn about the depth and beauty of life's most profound transitions.
