Hello neighbours,
My name is Lu Walker, and it is with deep gratitude that I introduce myself as a death doula serving our vibrant, diverse community.

My path to this work began quietly rooted in empathy, shaped by personal loss, and nurtured through years of community volunteering. I’ve seen the heartbreak, the silence, the unanswered questions that often accompany the end of life. But I’ve also witnessed something else: moments of profound beauty, connection, and peace. These moments inspired me to step into this calling, to walk alongside individuals and families during one of life’s most intimate and vulnerable transitions.
What Is a Death Doula?
If you’ve never heard of a death doula before, you’re not alone. The term might sound unfamiliar, but the heart of the work is something deeply human.
A death doula is a non-medical support person who offers emotional, spiritual, and practical care to individuals nearing the end of life, and to the people who love them. Think of us as companions, advocates, and gentle guides through a time that can feel overwhelming, sacred, and unknown.
Whether that means holding space for conversations, assisting with legacy projects, planning a vigil, or simply being a calming presence in the room, this work is about deep listening, meaningful connection, and unwavering support.
Filling the Gaps in End-of-Life Care
Modern medicine does a remarkable job addressing physical needs. But what about the emotional, existential, and spiritual aspects of dying? What about the families who feel lost in a sea of logistics and grief?
That’s where death doulas come in.
As a someone who has trained as a death doula, I aim to bridge the gap between medical care and meaningful connection. I help families navigate uncertainty, create space for reflection and ritual, and support individuals in crafting a farewell that reflects their values, culture, and life story.
My role is not to fix or solve, but to walk with you, shoulder to shoulder, through what is often a sacred, complex, and deeply human experience.
My Personal Approach: Presence, Story, and Respect
Every person’s journey is unique. My work begins with meeting you exactly where you are, no expectations, no judgments. I believe in the power of presence, of simply being with someone, listening with your whole heart, and holding space for whatever may arise.
Whether we’re sitting in quiet reflection, creating a memory box, building a playlist of favourite songs, or having a tough (but needed) family conversation, I am here to offer compassionate, personalized care.
At the heart of my approach is a belief that everyone deserves to be seen, heard, and honoured at life’s most tender thresholds.
Let’s Reclaim the Conversation Around Death
Death is not a failure or a taboo, it is a natural, universal part of the human story. And yet, it often remains unspoken, pushed to the margins of our lives.
I want to help change that.
Let’s talk about it. Let’s share stories, ask questions, and bring death back into the circle of community life with courage, compassion, and care. Whether you're planning ahead, caring for someone, or simply curious, I invite you to reach out. Together, we can create a community that holds space for grief and love, loss and celebration, endings and beginnings.
With gratitude,
Lu Walker
