When There Are No Words

About "When There Are No Words"

"When There Are No Words" is a panel discussion series exploring losses often met with bias or judgment. Through the personal stories of our panelists and audience participation, we aim to foster open dialogue around better supporting those dealing with stigma, grief, and loss.

Each "When There Are No Words" event features a panel of speakers who have experienced a similar type of loss. During these sessions, attendees have the opportunity to meet the panelists, hear their stories, and ask questions to gain insight into the support they received, both helpful and hurtful, and to learn from their experiences.

By understanding the lived experiences of these individuals, the series aims to cultivate care and compassion, empowering participants to become more confident and empathetic companions within their own communities.

Why "When There Are No Words" Matters

This initiative addresses the often unspoken pain and complex emotions that accompany stigmatized deaths. In times of deep grief, conventional consolations can fall short, leaving loved ones feeling isolated and misunderstood.

By creating a space for honest and compassionate dialogue, "When There Are No Words" helps to dismantle the stigma associated with these types of deaths. It also highlights the critical role of death doulas, community leaders, and professionals in providing empathetic, holistic care, ensuring that no one has to face these challenges alone.

Drug-Related Death & Grief

As part of Addictions and Mental Health Education Month, this event brings together a panel of five individuals who have lived through the profound grief of losing someone to a drug-related death. Panelists will candidly share their personal stories, highlighting the support they found helpful - or sometimes unhelpful. The discussion will explore the power of words, actions, and services in providing meaningful support, whether through informal gestures like calls and childcare or formal avenues like counselling and support groups.

This event is designed for anyone who wants to learn how to better support those dealing with drug-related losses. Whether you're a member of the general public, a professional who works directly with addictions, or a professional who works indirectly with addictions through healthcare, mental health, or social services, this session will offer invaluable insights.

**Please note, this is an educational event, not a support group, though it may benefit those grieving a drug-related death.**
